Choosing the Right Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums, or mums, are popular winter-flowering plants with many colors and forms. Choose a nursery plant with lots of buds instead of fully open flowers — this ensures longer blooming at home. Healthy green leaves are a must.
Soil & Bed Preparation
Mums grow best in slightly acidic, well-draining soil. A mix of garden soil, compost, and sand works perfectly. For potted mums, an 8–10 inch pot is enough, but make sure it has drainage holes.
Sunlight & Placement
Chrysanthemums need 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. They are best grown outdoors in winter as they love cool weather. If indoors, place them near a very sunny window.
Watering & Care
Keep the soil moist at all times but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during flowering. Pinch back new shoots in the growing season to make the plant bushier and produce more flowers.
Tools & Support
Feed the plant every 2 weeks with compost or liquid fertilizer while it’s flowering. Use pruners to remove dried flowers and yellow leaves. For pest protection, spray neem oil to prevent aphids and mites.
Growth & Harvest
Chrysanthemums bloom mainly in late autumn and winter. Deadhead (remove old flowers) regularly so the plant keeps producing fresh blooms. At the end of the season, cut the plant back and repot with fresh soil for the next year.
