Learn More About Gerbera
Choosing the Right Gerbera
Gerberas are loved for their big, colorful daisy-like flowers in red, pink, yellow, and orange. Choose a healthy plant with strong green leaves and flower buds (not fully opened flowers). Avoid plants with droopy or yellow leaves as they may be weak.
Soil & Bed Preparation
Gerberas like light, well-drained soil. A good mix is sandy loam soil with compost and cocopeat. Pots should be 8–10 inches deep so roots can spread. Proper drainage is important to prevent root rot.
Sunlight & Placement
Gerberas need 4–6 hours of bright light, but not harsh afternoon sun. Indoors, place them near a bright window with filtered light. Outdoors, give them morning sun and protect them from very strong heat.
Watering & Care
Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry. Never water directly on the flowers or crown (the center of the plant), as it causes rotting. Use a watering can at soil level. Mulching around the plant helps keep soil moist.
Tools & Support
Use clean scissors or pruners to remove old yellow leaves and dead flowers. Feed with liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks for continuous blooms. Watch for pests like aphids or fungal spots — treat with neem spray.
Growth & Harvest
Gerberas bloom for 6–8 months in a year. Cut flowers early in the morning with a sharp tool, and they’ll last longer in a vase. Repot every year with fresh soil to keep the plant healthy and blooming.
