Learn More About Camellia
Choosing the Right Camellia
Camellias are winter-blooming plants with rose-like flowers in red, pink, or white. Choose compact, bushy plants with dark green leaves and strong buds.
Soil & Bed Preparation
They prefer acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Mix garden soil with peat moss, compost, and sand. Pots of 12–14 inches or garden beds in shaded spots are ideal.
Sunlight & Placement
Camellias need partial shade. Morning sun and afternoon shade are best. Too much heat or direct sunlight burns the leaves.
Watering & Care
Keep soil moist at all times but avoid waterlogging. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on climate. Mulching helps keep roots cool.
Tools & Support
Fertilize in spring and summer with acid-loving plant food. Remove spent blooms and dead branches. Prune lightly after flowering season.
Growth & Harvest
Camellias bloom in winter and early spring. Flowers are long-lasting and very ornamental. With good care, camellias can live for decades.
