Choosing the Right Banana Plant
Select dwarf banana varieties (like Dwarf Cavendish) for pots and small gardens. Buy healthy suckers or tissue culture plants from a nursery. Avoid plants with yellow or torn leaves.
Soil & Bed Preparation
Bananas love rich, well-drained loamy soil with lots of organic matter. Mix garden soil + compost + cocopeat in equal parts. Large pots (18–20 inches) or grow bags are best for dwarf bananas.
Sunlight & Placement
Requires 6–8 hours of full sun daily. Best grown on terraces, balconies, or open gardens. Protect from strong winds, as stems can topple when heavy with fruit.
Watering & Care
Water 2–3 times a week; keep soil moist at all times. Do not allow waterlogging around the roots. Mulch around the plant to conserve moisture.
Tools & Fertilizers
Feed every 2–3 weeks with compost or banana fertilizer (rich in potassium). Use bamboo or wooden supports to hold the plant upright when fruits appear. Remove suckers (side shoots) to focus energy on the main plant.
Growth & Harvest
Bananas take 10–12 months to fruit. Harvest when bunches are full-sized and green — ripen indoors. Each plant fruits once, then new suckers grow to continue the cycle.
