Choosing the Right Grape Plant
Choose grafted or rooted grapevine saplings from a nursery. Seedless varieties like Thompson Seedless or Perlette are popular for home growing. Select a plant with firm stems and healthy green leaves.
Soil & Bed Preparation
Grapes need well-drained sandy loam soil with compost. Avoid heavy clay soil that traps water. If potting, use at least a 16–18 inch deep container with drainage.
Sunlight & Placement
Grapevines love full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily. Best grown along fences, walls, or trellises. Place in open gardens or terraces where they can spread.
Watering & Care
Water regularly while young. Mature vines need deep watering every 7–10 days. Avoid overwatering during ripening, as it makes fruits sour.
Tools & Fertilizers
Grapes need strong trellises, wires, or stakes for support. Fertilize every 2 months with compost and potash-rich feed. Prune heavily each year after harvest to encourage new shoots.
Growth & Harvest
Grapes start fruiting in 2–3 years. Harvest bunches when they turn plump, juicy, and sweet in late summer. Regular pruning ensures better crops each season.
