Learn More About Chikoo
Choosing the Right Chikoo Plant
Choose grafted chikoo plants for faster fruiting. Saplings with strong stems and healthy green leaves are best. Avoid seed-grown plants (they take 6–8 years to fruit).
Soil & Bed Preparation
Sapota prefers deep, sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. Mix garden soil, compost, and sand in equal parts. Large pots (18–20 inches) are suitable for dwarf varieties.
Sunlight & Placement
Needs full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily. Best for gardens, terraces, or open spaces. Shade reduces flowering and fruiting.
Watering & Care
Water 2–3 times a week during hot weather. Reduce watering in winter. Keep soil moist but never soggy.
Tools & Fertilizers
Fertilize every 2–3 months with compost or cow dung manure. Use neem spray to control mealybugs and scale insects. Light pruning helps shape the plant and improve yield.
Growth & Harvest
Grafted plants start fruiting in 3–4 years. Harvest when fruits turn brown and slightly soft to touch. Chikoo fruits are sweet, grainy, and eaten fresh.
