Learn More About Fig
Choosing the Right Fig Plant
Choose grafted or nursery fig plants for faster harvest. Popular varieties: Brown Turkey, Poona Fig. Pick a plant with strong stems and healthy leaves.
Soil & Bed Preparation
Figs grow best in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Mix garden soil, sand, and compost in equal parts. Pots of 14–16 inches are fine for figs.
Sunlight & Placement
Needs 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Terraces and balconies with full sun are ideal.
Watering & Care
Water weekly during active growth. Reduce watering once fruits ripen. Figs tolerate slight dryness better than overwatering.
Tools & Fertilizers
Fertilize monthly with compost and potassium-rich organic feed. Light pruning after harvest keeps plants compact. Figs rarely suffer pests, but birds may eat ripe fruits — use nets.
Growth & Harvest
Figs fruit in 1–2 years (grafted). Harvest when fruits turn soft, droop slightly, and ooze sweet liquid. Best enjoyed fresh or dried for storage.
