Learn More About Bougainvillea

Choosing the Right Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea is a hardy, colorful plant that grows as a shrub, climber, or dwarf variety. It’s best for outdoor gardens, terraces, or large balconies. Pick a plant with strong stems and bright-colored bracts (the paper-like leaves that look like flowers).

Soil & Bed Preparation

Bougainvillea grows best in sandy, well-drained soil. Mix garden soil with compost and sand in equal parts. Avoid heavy clay soils because they hold too much water and harm the roots.

Sunlight & Placement

This plant loves full sunlight. Give it 6–8 hours of direct sun daily for heavy blooming. It looks beautiful when grown along fences, walls, or in big pots on terraces.

Watering & Care

Bougainvillea doesn’t like too much water. Water deeply once, then wait until the soil dries before watering again. Overwatering leads to lots of leaves but fewer flowers. In summer, increase watering but still let the soil dry in between.

Tools & Support

Regular pruning is necessary to shape the plant and control its size. Use strong stakes or a trellis if you’re growing climbing varieties. Fertilize monthly with phosphorus-rich fertilizer to boost flowering.

Growth & Harvest

Bougainvillea blooms mostly in spring and summer, and its colorful bracts can last for weeks. After a heavy blooming cycle, prune the plant so it can rest and prepare for the next set of flowers. It’s a long-living, low-maintenance plant once settled.
