Seasonal Planting Calendar

Seasons & Plants

One of the smartest habits a gardener or farmer can build is keeping a seasonal planting calendar. This way, you always know which vegetables, flowers, and fruits are best for the current time of year.

When you plant according to the season, the soil, weather, and sunlight naturally support your plants — meaning less work for you and healthier growth for them.

🗓️ The 3 Growing Seasons & Their Crops

🍂 Rabi Season (Winter: Oct – Feb)

Vegetables: Spinach, coriander, fenugreek (methi), radish, carrot, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, onion.

Flowers: Marigold, pansy, dianthus, petunia.

Fruits: Strawberry, guava.

👉 Rabi is the easiest season for beginners. Most leafy greens and root crops thrive in the cool weather.

🌧️ Kharif Season (Monsoon: Jun – Sep)

Vegetables: Lady's finger (bhindi), beans, bottle gourd, pumpkin, ridge gourd, cucumber.

Flowers: Sunflower, balsam, cosmos, zinnia.

Fruits: Papaya, banana, custard apple.

👉 The monsoon season is great for climbers and gourds. But remember, waterlogging is a common problem — so focus on drainage.

☀️ Zaid Season (Summer: Mar – Jun)

Vegetables: Tomato, chili, brinjal, watermelon, cucumber, bitter gourd.

Flowers: Rose, jasmine, hibiscus, portulaca.

Fruits: Mango, muskmelon, watermelon.

👉 In summer, always use mulching (covering soil with straw, leaves, cocopeat) to save water and protect roots from heat.

🧑‍🌾 How to Use This Calendar

Here's how to make the most of it:

  • Look at the current month and identify the season.
  • Pick at least one vegetable and one flower from that season to plant.
  • Rotate crops: Don't grow the same thing again and again in the same soil — change between leafy, root, and fruit crops for healthier soil.

✍️ Practical Exercise for You

Try this simple activity:

  • Take today's month and note which season it belongs to.
  • Choose 2–3 plants from the calendar that suit your space (one leafy, one fruiting, one flower).
  • Mark them in a notebook as your seasonal gardening plan.
